Thanks to the iPlayer, I have never really been able to picture the characters in Cabin Pressure as looking anything unlike the actors who play them … this is fine for Douglas and Carolyn, but Martin in particular is supposed to be the opposite of tall and authoritative Benedict Cumberbatch, so as I listened again I tried to force myself to picture him in a new way, and came up with someone who’s somewhere between Steve Punt and Schmendrick the Magician.

Have you ever thought of the way I live at home? Yes well maybe you should. I get ten pounds an hour as a man with a van. But my van’s very old and breaks down a lot and half the time I’m not there because i’m flying an aircraft for you. The only thing I’ve got going for me is that I’m cheap. So I live in the attic of a horrible shared house where I’m the only grown up. The other five are students at the agricultural college. I’ve been there for nine years now! That’s three generations of students. They pass me on to the next lot like a friendly ghost. ‘Are you living in park side terrace next year? well there’s a pilot in the attic but don’t worry he never bothers anyone!’ I never go out, I can’t afford nice food, I live on toast and pasta, and sometimes for a treat, I have a baked potato! So….just so you know, I’m not asking because I’m greedy.
